INJUSTICE: GODS AMONG US Review

So here is my review on the new game released by Netherealm Studios: Injustice Gods Among Us. Now I'll be the first to admit that I am horrible at fighting games. I like playing them but I am not skilled at them. In fact I've only really spent anytime trying to understand this game and NRS' last game MK9. Having said that, I will give my impressions about this game.

So, to start off, I found this game to be very similar to Mortal Kombat, which is to be expected, and which I am very glad. The gameplay was smooth and fluid just like MK9 was. What makes Injustice stand out from MK9 is the lack of fatalities. Don't get me wrong when I say that, I believe the exclusion of fatalities was a great move on NRS' part as it wouldn't really fit in this universe, and I have a hard time believing that DC would allow you to remove the spines of classic DC icons or rip them in half. What has taken place instead of the X-Ray moves first introduced in MK9 are Super Moves. Each character has a unique special that you can use when your power bar is at max. These are incredibly enjoyable additions to the game. It's always fun to see Superman punch his enemy out into space and them punch them back to the earth or see Bane break his opponents back on his knee. The only negative thing I would have to say about the Super moves are that they become very repetitive after awhile and I believe if there would be like two or three moves per fighter, it would make the experience even more exciting.

One thing that sets Injustice apart from the other fighting games out there is the Story Mode. Now, when I think of fighting games I don't usually look for much of a story. When I picked up Mortal Kombat 9, I was blown away by the story mode, not that it was a perfect story, but that NRS took the time to make an interesting story and incorporate it in the gameplay. The same can be said for Injustice. I feel like having a story for Injustice is critical for its success and NRS nailed it. We all love the stories of our favorite DC Comic characters and then wondering why these superheroes are fighting each other is truly an exciting experience. Having said that my one complaint about story mode is its length! It took me maybe three hours to beat the entire story and I really wish that it could have been longer. I was expecting it to be longer than MK9 but unfortunately it wasn't which is saddening because it didn't give the screentime to some of our favorite heroes and villains like Nightwing, Hawkgirl, Shazam, or Raven. These characters are only in the story as their evil counterparts and hopefully in the next Injustice they take advantage of all the characters.

Overall, this game is a must have for DC fans, comic fans, and fighting game fans. It's truly worth picking up for its fast paced action, it's loaded with extra content, and the story mode which was satisfying. If you can get past some of the negative sides of it (QTE and graphics) then this game will be as enjoyable to you as it was to me! 8.5/10

I'll be talking about the characters in the next post thanks!
